Originally incorporated as the Portland & Seattle Railway in 1905, the name was changed to Spokane, Portland & Seattle in February 1908.  Full operations on the line began in 1909.  Many additions and changes were made over the years by the parent roads, NP and GN.  At 12:01 am on March 3, 1970, the railroad was absorbed along with the parent roads as part of the Burlington Northern merger.
